WHAT IS NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING?
The National Youth Leader Training (NYLT) is a six day outdoor experience for boy leaders in support of the Scoutmaster's responsibility of the training of the troop youth leadership. National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boys Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
Scouting recognizes that Scoutmasters have the responsibility of training their own youth leaders. The purpose of NYLT is not to assume that role, but to support it.
An NYLT course is set up to represent a month in the life of a typical Scout troop, including mirroring the troop structure by assigning incoming participants to patrols. Participants use the full range of BSA resources for planning and conducting meetings that are interesting, lively, and relevant - a skill they can incorporate with great effectiveness when they return to their home troops. Along the way they also enjoy the Scouting fellowship and fun that are key components of the patrol method.
NYLT participants discover that leading themselves and leading others requires a vision - a picture of future success. A constant refrain of NYLT is "If you can see it, you can be it." NYLT participants are given presentations that will give them a toolbox of effective leadership skills they can make their own. Each participant will prepare his own vision, his own picture of future success. Our purpose is nothing less than changing the future for the better by preparing forward thinking, dynamic leaders of today and the future.
WHO MAY ATTEND?
Each NYLT participant must be a First Class Scout, 13 years of age or older and currently filling a leadership position in the troop as senior patrol leader or assistant senior patrol leader, or likely to assume one of these positions in the immediate future. No age or rank waivers will be granted. Registration is first come first served until the maximum 48 Scouts are met. (There are no troop quotas however please read above as the Scout must be 13 when the course begins and must be a minimum of a First Class Scout). This is a BSA policy decision and may not be waived by anyone in Transatlantic Council.
IS THE HOME SCOUTMASTER INVOLVED?
NYLT is intended to strengthen the relationship between the youth leader and his Scoutmaster. Scoutmasters are welcome and encouraged to attend the closing ceremony on Friday night of the course. Parents are also encouraged to attend this special and meaningful event in the life of their boy.
HOW CAN I SIGN UP?
Applications, course guides, and payment information will be posted on the page by March 15th, 2010. Check back them for details.
