Friends of Scouting, We are Scouting in Europe
Friends of Scouting is our annual giving campaign to sustain our council’s annual operation. Briefly, we need to raise our entire operating budget in order to maintain a BSA presence in Europe and we do it with the families of our members.
Some key points:
•There is no funding from the National Office of the Boy Scouts of America to financially support our program. We must be entirely self-sustaining to maintain our organization in Europe
•There is limited corporate support for program and we truly must depend on the families of our membership to financially sustain our program as we have done for the past 60 years.
•Morale, Welfare and Recreation Support and the Overseas Council Fees account for 1/3rd of our annual budget. We must raise $1.1.million on our own. Our Friends of Scouting goal is $200,000
•The campaign starts in January 2010 and our victory celebration is in April 2010
We need your help right now to provide dates for presentation. The best dates are:
Blue and Gold Banquets for Cubs
Courts of Honor for Boy Scouts
Parent Nights for Venturers
The presentation is short (or should be short), informative and gives people an opportunity to contribute. Our goal is to let everyone know that they play an important role in Scouting from serving as volunteers, supportive parents, and helping to maintain the infrastructure to have scouting overseas. There is no one else…just us, so let’s join together and do our best!
To provide your presentation date please e-mail fos@tac-bsa.org with your unit and preferred date.
We appreciate your generous support of the 2009 campaign. We raised $190,000 in pledge and cash. That was our goal for the year as we knew it would be difficult with the transition (our goal was $10,000 less than our 2008 campaign of $200,000). If you contributed and did not receive your recognition for your gift, please contact us at fos@tac-bsa.org so we can provide the proper recognition for your support!
To earn Presidential Unit entitling your unit to a 10% discount on all TAC Scout Shop purchases until February 28, 2011, your unit needs to have a minimum 40% participation and the average gift is $40 with pledges paid by 30 June (or an agreed later date).
For our 2002 Friends of Scouting campaign we introduced a "Scout is Trustworthy" council strip. The first of a twelve part collection of special council strips highlighting the Scout Law for contributions of $100.00 or more. If you would like to contribute to support the BSA's program in Europe, and receive this council strip, click on make a contribution and follow the instructions.
For our 2009 campaign we will offer the 9th Scout Law (Thrifty) in the series for a contribution of $100 or more.

James E. West Fellowship Award
The James E. West Fellowship Award is a national recognition for individuals who contribute $1,000 or more in cash or securities to the Transatlantic Council endowment trust fund. This contribution is in addition to, and does not diminish or replace the donor's annual gift to the council's Friends of Scouting Campaign.
Organizations or individuals may contribute an award in honor of someone - a Eagle Scout, a Silver Beaver recipient, council president, or district chairman, or in memory of a departed loved one, business associate or special Scouter.
The James E. West Fellowship Award is an attractive 8 by 10 inch certificate, personalized with the donor's name date of gift and council name. In addition, there is a distinctive lapel pin/charm and an embroidered square knot for uniform wear. While it is a national recognition, the James E. West Fellowship Award is authorized and presented by the Transatlantic Council.
This award is named after the first Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America who exemplified Ralph Waldo Emerson's observation that "an institution is the lengthened shadow of one man". Scouting today is the "lengthened shadow" of more than three decades of the farseeing and dedicated leadership of Dr. James E. West.
Those who are recognized by the James E. West Fellowship Award will cast their own "lengthened shadow" as they help ensure the Scouting legacy for future generations of young people and create the financial stability of the program in the Transatlantic Council
In Transatlantic Council funds can be pledged over a 2 year period but the recognition can only be provided once the James E. West pledge has been paid
